Google Apps in Education


Using Google apps in education allows schools to bring communication and collaboration tools to the entire academic community for free. Users can simply login to the service to access their files and tools. Google Apps offers communication tools (Gmail, Google Talk, and Google Calendar), productivity tools (Google Docs: text files, spreadsheets, and presentations), a customizable start page (iGoogle), and Google Sites (to develop web pages). Also, an Education Edition includes most of the extras in the Premium Edition and is no cost to k-12 and higher education. Google Apps is becoming very popular with students grades K-12 as well as higher education students. Students, teachers and staff can share ideas more quickly and get work done more effectively when they have access to the same powerful communication and sharing tools.

Google Docs - This app allows you to create and share a variety of online documents including word processing, spreadsheets, forms, and presentations. Google Docs helps promote group work and peer editing skills in the classroom. Online collaboration allows students to work on a paper or project with their fellow peers even when tey are not in the same place. It can also help students stay organized and keep on task. The work done on Google Docs saves work done automatically so they never have to remember to save it. Teachers also use Google Docs to publish announcement about assignments and to monitor and respond to student work.






Google Sites - This app allows its users to easily build shared websites that include videos, images, gadgets, and documents. It is free for schools and allows studetns and teachers to create searchable web pages. They are easy to create given a wide range of web page templates. They can also be set to a private setting is desired and can have multiple authors.

Google Reader - Google Reader lets you subscribe to websites so new content comes to you when it is posted. when you subscribe to these sites, Google Reader will automatically send them to your Google Reader account and notify you. You can also add notes to these sites and share them with your friends by simply clicking the share button on Google Reader.
